Alex Le Great

Alex Le Great was foaled February 5, 2007 here in Kentucky.  His sire is Afleet Alex and his dam is Colonial Glitter. Click here to view his pedigree.  He started in 9 races from September 2009 to January 2012 racing at Saratoga, Belmont Park, Gulfstream Park, Delaware Park, Aqueduct and Tampa Bay Downs. Click here to see his racing profile.

When Alex's racing career did not show the promise his owner had hoped, he was placed in the Final Furlong Horse Retirement program.  Click here to learn more about Final Furlong.  It wasn't purely by chance that I found Alex.  I had been in contact with the Final Furlong program director about another horse who turned out not to be a match.  At the time, I asked her to keep me in mind, should another horse come into the program that might be for me.  Shortly thereafter, I received an email that a "very special horse" had been posted on the website and I should take a look.  When I saw the first photo of Alex, something told me he was "the one."  Still I was aprehensive, this would be the first horse I had aquired "all on my own," each of my previous ponies and horses having been picked by my mother.

Momentary devastatation struck when a bone chip in his left front fetlock was discovered during his routine veterinary inspection at Final Furlong.  Several of the best vets (including my own) assured me that his particular bone chip was an excellent candidate for removal and that once the chip was removed and lay-up completed he would be fit to go as far as I could take him.  So I decided, with my wonderful husband's blessing, that I wanted to adopt him and then make it possible for him to have the surgery.   I officially adopted Alex from Final Furlong in the beginning of March of 2012.  His bone chip was successfully removed March 12, 2012.  After completing his lay-up, which Final Furlong graciously handled for me, he came home to Kentucky, June 1, 2012.

It was better than Christmas morning when he walked off the trailer... he was here... and he was mine...

Alex officially started his retraining and adventure into show horse land June of 2012.
